G'day fella's, I'm Mick Lee, and  I'm no longer as jealous of Steve Carrets aussie attexs, (even though he's got 2 and their heaps better than mine), as I've found one in Tasmania (only one I've ever seen) As soon as I learn to drive this bloody computer properly I'll put some pics on. There must have been more down here, because I just bought a brand new top half that's been in a blokes shed for 15 years. Mines a 295 wildwolf with t20, but its had a honda cb 360 heart transplant. Hopefully she'll soon be like brand new. Talk to ya's soon, Mick

I am a new proud owner of my first 6 wheeler.  I have a lot of work in front of me on my rebuild.  My Attex 6 wheel has been sitting idle for the last 14 years in a field. I am just beginning my restoration project.  I was pretty excited logging onto your web site because the picture of your Attex 6 wheeler is the exact same one I have.  I look forward in navigating through your website and welcome any tips you may have.

Sincerely,

 Mike James

I'm very happy to have come across this website. I have a 1969 vintage attex that I have rebuilt a couple of times and I'm always looking for Baker Hill 5000 & 7000 trannys and parts. Hopefully there are others out there who might be able to help. I welcome any e-mails from fellow Attex owners regarding their machines and available parts.

Regards,
John

Hi this is Dan from Michigan,

Great site very informative I have a Superchief Attex and 9 of the 300 models have had these for years, Some of them my dad owed my dad worked for Apache trailers (Vesely co) for 20 some years the company that made Sierra Trail Boss so we have many Trail
Bosses now totals 30 some machines. Just makes you feel like a kid again. I remember going to the races around here 30 years ago and watching these funny machines flying around the track and running over each other and tipping over. I just had our 8mm movies of the races transferred over to dvd. It's fun to watch. It brings back allot of good memories.

Dave,

You have done a great job with this Fan site! Brings back a lot of memories from when I worked at the ATV Mfg. Co back in the early seventies. I was hired at the Rt. 8 plant and worked there for a year or so till they opened the facility in Larenceville. I worked there for another couple of years. Good luck with your site and if I can answer any questions about the old plants don't hesitate to write...

Oh my! That Attex Video is Awesome! I've never seen anything like that before! That's it ( I'm hooked) got to have an Attex! I can see why you have that kind of roll cage. did I mention I used to road race superbikes -250 grand prix for about 10 years took a break after a bad crash in Indianapolis. I used to run in the AMA and Western Eastern Road Racing associations last two years. I did some flattrack racing, short track, Peoria TT, Springfield mile. If I had an Attex like that one I would like to race it. I would even travel to do it!

Thanks, Dave

Hey Dave,

I just ran across Your site! I live in Central Illinois, about 100 miles south of Chicago.  Where exactly do you meet to ride?  Might be interested in participating some time?  I've been into six wheelers for a long time. I think since I was about 10 yrs old.  My grandpa had a Attex 252 Colt. Awesome machine for the money. He bought it used. 1 yr. old and man did we run the wheels off that thing. Had cattle at the time and used it pretty much everyday! When I was older my Mom and Dad bought me a Max II. I think it was around an 1985 model..? had a red top. Had that machine along with the Attex Colt. Grandpa let Me have the Colt later. Had all kinds of problems with the left jackshaft that transferred power to the back two wheels on the Max. Chain tensioners sucked on the Max. Had overheating problems with that JLO 295 motor. Pretty much the whole machine was a piece of %*#@!  That Attex would run circles around it any day of the week!  That 252 JLO with the Mikuni slide carb was a smooth running engine with awesome power! Think it had more guts than the 295. Well later on in life the Attex started to fall apart bodywise. Before I knew they had kits to patch the body!? Unfortunately I had to get rid of the Attex due to that reason. Sold it to a friend for $50.00. Dumb huh!? About 4 yrs ago I sold the Max to someone on route 6x6 in New York! From running a Attex to running a Max,   I would never consider a Max machine again. I  now have a modified Attex 400 Chief. I call it a Attex 570 Chief due to the fact that I installed a Briggs Vanguard 18hp. 570 cube horizontal shaft engine in it.  I bought a brand new body a few years back. Yellow top/green bottom, sandblasted and repainted my frame, new axles, bearings, rebuilt my T20 tranny, engine conversion with new mounts, had to modify my engine cover to clear the air cleaner housing on the motor, cut a hole out of the top big enough to do the job then bought a small hood scoop from JC Whitney to cover up the hole. Looks pretty cool and also helps add a little ventilation! Had to rig the exhaust on the motor. I bought a muffler from Briggs and routed it out the back of the machine. I bought a complete wiring harness from Recreatives for a Max II, since they use the Briggs engine. I wired it all up, and installed a heated throttle cable. I do all my own wrenching and know quite a bit about the Attex machines. I learned allot from working on that Max!!!! I'll get some pics to you of my Attex. Looks so good I hate to ride it now!  Well, hope I didn't bore you with my story I just love talking about these machines and have no one in my area who owns a 6X6. Thanks again for creating such an awesome website!!!!

Talk more soon!

Hi Dave,

Hey I'm really glad you like all the stuff I sent. As far as making all of it downloadable from your site, I don't have a clue. I'm afraid that I don't know the first thing about building and maintaining websites. You've done such a nice job with yours that I just figured you'd know how.  You can use my drawings anyway you want. I'd be flattered to see them on your site. Besides, us Attex guys have to stick (pun intended) together.

Talk soon and have a Merry Christmas!

Hi Dave,

Dave,

I finally got to look over your whole site and it cleared up a mystery for me. One of the Attex's I own came with an owner's manual and was listed as a 400 Chief. And the machine has a JLO 398cc engine in it but it doesn't look like my other 400 Chief. After looking at the sheet of axle specs on your site I've come to the conclusion that the machine is a 295 Wild Wolf with a 400 engine in it. I just got done replacing the axles and the specs match that of the 295. I love your site and visit it whenever I'm online. Not much chance of getting any snow pics down here in my Attex's, but I am planning on taking some pics of my two machines and I'd love to see them on your site!

Thanks!

Have a Merry Christmas!

Helloooo, David,

And Merry Christmas! Hope your Holiday is full of 6-wheel drifts and two-stroke-smoke.  Don K has asked when we're planning on heading down to visit you and ride @ Hillsville, Pennsylvania. The long-term forecast for early January is supposed to be a bit mild (low 40s high 30s), I could swing down any Friday or Saturday.  Let's put something together!!!

Hey Dave!

Hey good job on your sight! It's really starting to become magnet for the 6x6 community. I make it a regular stop every time I get on the Internet. Talk to you later

Merry Christmas!

Wow, Dave...

The Site's looking GREAT.  Attex-Online is always my second stop each time I go online, the first being my e-mail to check what updates to look for on Attex-Online. I think the "What Year Is My Attex?" page is looking stellar.  This'll really help people really figure out what they have, and what to look for.  Nice work, and way to keep things rolling, especially with the bombardment of e-mails you must get daily from fans. I don't think I have any more information to add to help people identify the actual year.  I know that I just picked up (about) a 1969 machine, though.  You wouldn't believe how light that machine is.  It's disgusting.  Everything needs to be redone, but who knows; it may run again.  Meanwhile, I picked up the seat for the racer, and will be working on that cage this winter when I get the chance.  You need to get your racer done too, and we'll all make a showing at the next event.   Hopefully I'll have more pictures for each category coming soon, if I can just get a camera man.

Again, everything is looking great...nice work dude..

Hi dave,

I just wanted to tell you to keep up the good work on the attex site!  It's good to see someone is trying to keep it alive.  I have some pics if you would be interested or some of the other people on the site.

You have a great site! I am from Shoemakersville Pa. Located near the Cabela's in Hamburg (off route 78 between Harrisburg & Allentown). Wish I had time to get my toys running. I have a 500 Superchief that just needs an outer axle bearing. A 400 Thunderchief that needs major restoring. A 400ST that a started to work on for my son but has been sitting. I have a 252 Colt that is just parts. And about 6 months ago I got a Max 2. My parents have a boat dealership where we also sold Max. Hoping to go to the factory in Buffalo to get a much needed upper body ( the year it was made it had a poly lower & an abs upper body). My son will probably use it since it is under 300cc. He would still prefer the Superchief. I was even thinking of putting the 400ST up for sale. Too many projects! I will have to borrow a digital camera to get you some pictures. Thanks for keeping Attex popular.

Hi Dave,

Just visited your great website. Saw my super chief 500's with my daughter Brandie. You have a great site going so keep it up! The people out there that know the ATTEX line are really going to love your site. I will send more pictures but I can only do a couple at a time. The super chief 500 on the trailer is the one I sold to Bill Gerber. I miss my baby. I will need to find the photos of my other super chief 500 that I still have. So you will have some emails from me. Do what you want with the pics. Thanks for the great site.

Thank you very much.!!!  Your info is just what I was looking for prior to making the listing. It's not often you find someone who takes the time unsolicited to divulge information like you have done.  Again Thank you and if there is anything I can do too repay the favor let me know.

Hey Dave,

Great site! You have done a lot of work and in my opinion your site is passing up Route 6X6 website in regards to Attex history and information.

My dad solved the problem with our Superchief Lil truck from breaking down after 15-20 minutes of driving around on a beach. He ended up relocating the condensers and coils (see picture attached) to get them away from the heat of the engine. We drive it a lot on the beach and sometimes the sand is real soft and the engine really works hard to get through it. Anyway, we worked out that the compartment inside the Chaparral cover is way too hot (hot enough to burn skin) to house the electric's. We took it for a very tough run after my dad relocated everything and it worked fantastic! Phew!!! What a relief.

Dave

Oh, you're absolutely killing me! Good stuff! One last thing before I actually do some work here today.  I have the beginnings of a plan to make either the S-chief or the old ST/400 body (see pics) into a much more serious machine.  It would involve my Wiseco'd 503 that's currently in the S-chief, and a nice expansion chamber sticking out of the back.  I'm leaning toward the S-chief, but who knows?  Any thoughts?

David,

Really enjoyed the site, one little note* as far as the older A.B.S. bodies weighing 100lbs less than polyethylene ones. This was a comparison of completed machines. There is a 100 lb difference between the body styles. But, old small lightweight 5000 -7000 series trany type vehicles against the bigger chiefe style t-20 trannied ones, there isn.t much weight difference in the A.B.S. Chiefe type t-20 trany vehicles vrs. polyethylene ones. And yea, the older 5000 searies tranny vehicles with 440cc engines could rip your head off.

The kit's are presently $20.00, and cover approximately 1 square foot at hull thickness, or lot's and lot's of cracks! We have experimented, and have arrived at a fairly close to a neutral color between 3 of the most often found shades of ABS in Attex, We also have black for the floorboards and engine covers.

David,

I read on your website, and it is quite interesting, how Attex went out of business.  I have heard from other people the Attex company is for sale. Please tell me if you know anything about this.  It's time to bring this company back to life (along with floatation tires!!).

 Thank You,
 Andrew

Q: What does Attex mean?

A: Our favorite machines were named after an Attex deer in Africa.

Attex Strong

A guy sold me a showroom 1972 Attex 400cc Chief. He said he busted his granddaughter putting an acorn in the gas tank, and that I would need to fish it out. When I emptied it, there were  about 100 - 150 acorns, a handful of nuts & bolts, 1 screwdriver (craftsman) 1 set of keys, 7 sockets (snap-on) 3 wrenches (craftsman) 1 center punch, and 2 or 3 handfuls of gravel...

Hi, I live in Australia and wanted to let you know that Attex's made it to the "Land Down Under". In 1973-74 a car dealership imported a whole heap and sold them. Not sure where they all went to. My dad still has the one he purchased in 1974 (440 Thunderchief) and several years later, he bought a 500 Superchief Lil' Truck off a guy in PA.

Hello,

Great Attex site!  I'm Don Kinyon's nephew from New York.  I've attached a couple pictures of my 1972 ST/"503", which started out as an ST/400 which itself was in beautiful shape. It's powered by a twin carb 503 Rotax.  It has great manners both bouncing around in the swamp and at a full speed 8000 RPM blast. Keep up the good work, and hope to see more!  If there's any way that I could contribute to your site, I'd love to be able to!

Mike Cummings Buffalo, NY

ABS or Poly body...

Did you know that even though the ABS bodies have become a little bit more brittle over the years than the Poly bodies, an older ABS body is just a little more than 100 pounds lighter than the newer Poly body. So if you are building a fast machine, you might want to look for an older body...
